Sunday, August 18, 2019 Orlando Sentinel | A23 Opinions:
Francisco Gonzalez, philanthropy director, National Review Institute. I’m not one to call for tearing down statues of imperfect people. However, I’m happy the Florida legislature replaced the statue of Confederate general Edmund Kirby in the U.S. Capitol’s statuary hall. A controversy has now arisen since taxpayer-supported Lake County Historical Museum wants to house the statue there. I applaud the idea by state Rep. Geraldine Thompson to instead move the statue to the Olustee Battlefield in North Florida, which would provide an excellent opportunity to teach CivilWar history and answer the questions about Gen. Smith and the reasons Florida joined the Confederacy during the Civil War.
